Green and Blue Non Beach Florida Destination Wedding
From owner Michael S. Novilla:
It was wonderful working with Jessica and Jacob as they both really appreciated all of the painstaking work and details that went into restoring and renovating NOVA 535. Their working in architecture enabled them to use our building as part of the overall decorating in such a lovely way. I’m always delighted when a couple who are in love, are smart and creative, come together to create a masterful art show – really that’s what this wedding was, in fact Zen may be a good word to describe. They only added just enough, the perfect complements to our building. to showcase their love for each other and for their guests. Congrats to Jacob and Jessica!!
Downtown St. Pete Destination Wedding
Jessica and Jacob chose to host a destination St. Petersburg wedding because the bride is from Tampa Bay, and she wanted to showcase the Florida sunshine.
“With the date we chose, we knew Florida would have great weather and that our guests could enjoy the city and the beach,” the bride shared.
Although they were having a destination Florida wedding, the Oklahoma bride and groom did not want a typical beach wedding ceremony.
“Both being in the architecture field, we were looking for an urban setting that had an outdoor area for the ceremony and indoor space for the reception; this drew us to downtown St. Pete, aka DTSP,” Jessica explained. “Being downtown allowed us to move to different and diverse locations for pictures.”
To complement the urban, city feel, Jessica and Jacob chose unique, modern St. Pete wedding venue NOVA 535.
“NOVA 535 was perfect. We wanted a space where the building itself could serve as decoration and could help create the backdrop to the event. The renovated space with the exposed brick walls and the height of the venue was a big draw. The adjacent courtyard was also a plus because it was private and was not a far walk to the reception,” the bride shared. “With the venue having a lot of character already built in, we built upon and took cues from what was there to create our own unique setting for our event.”
When choosing a color scheme for their wedding, the bride and groom were inspired by their venue’s surroundings.
“We took the green from the bamboo in the courtyard, the blue was chosen to complement the green, and we happened to find the wedding party dresses in blue,” Jessica explained. “The flowers greatly drove the colors as well, looking towards succulents, cabbages and flowers that were common for spring.”
What did you look for in a wedding venue?
Although we were in Florida, I was set against having a beach wedding. Both being in the architecture field, we were looking for an urban setting that had an outdoor area for the ceremony and indoor space for the reception; this drew us to downtown St. Pete. Being downtown allowed us to move to different and diverse locations for pictures. We also looked for large open space for the reception so people could sit and dance all together. We wanted a space where the building itself could serve as decoration and could help create the backdrop to the event.
NOVA 535 was perfect. The renovated space with the exposed brick walls and the height of the venue was a big draw. The adjacent courtyard was also a plus because it was private and was not a far walk to the reception. With the venue having a lot of character already built in, we built upon and took cues from what was there to create our own unique setting for our event. It was also great that there was catering and dressing rooms for us to use.
The service at NOVA was great. They made sure we understood all that was going to happen and helped us make last minute changes because of the weather. Their list of vendors also gave us a great starting point.
The Proposal:
Jacob was living in Oklahoma City, OK, and I was still in St. Louis, MO. Just after Christmas, he was visiting me in St. Louis before helping me move to Oklahoma City. We were spending the day going to places around the city that we hadn’t been to yet, as well as a few of our favorite places.
We started at one of our favorite brunch spots, then went to the Chain of Rocks bridge, which is part of Route 66. While we were walking across the bridge we kept putting the camera in spots to take pictures. We went to pose for a picture, he proposed, and we caught it all on film with continuous shooting!
